what are the main differences between the 1991 M5 and the 1991 535i. Other than the twin turbo and twin intercoolers and other engine upgrades, the body looks surprisingly similar. Is it worth the extra money if i were to buy a used 1991 m5 rather than a 1991 535i?

Im pretty sure there are no Turbos on the stock M5. I know the suspension is drastically upgraded as is the transmission, braking system, basically EVERYTHING. The difference is night and day driving on and off a track! The rims should be a lot different if you are looking for the look factor, but your right, there isn't too much different. The good part about that is the sleeper factor, just wait til some ricer wants to race you in his integra and all he sees are your tailights, go with the M5, if you don't you are NUTS, that's an amazing car and I plan to buy one to put in the garage next to my 98 M3!!!!
Congrats on your M vehicle!

Not to say other bmw's are worthless (They are all good cars, yes, even the 528 and 318. Maybe not the 316. Just kidding), but ///m's are a different class altogether. Forgive me for saying this, but between any roadster vs. an mroadster (z8 was manufactured by motorsports, so I consider than an m), any 3-series to the m3, any 5-series to the m5... the m is the king of the hill. That's just the way it is.

The horsepower, imo, isn't the most important difference.
What's really important are the handling differences.
