I know I may be preaching to the quire but this is my dilemma. I have been looking to buy a Porsche Cayenne because it has 4 doors, it is quick, good in the snow, and I have never owned a Porsche. I currently have a 2001 330 Coupe which is due back on lease in August. My wife really!!!!! wants a four door cuz we plan on having a baby some time in 2005. So after looking at the Cayenne I realized I would be paying about 50 grand which is the same as an M3. The M3 does not have 4 doors but I was thinking I could throw a baby seat in the back for the few times a month I would need it. I have heard about some problems with the 2004 Cayenne. I am also concerned about the fact that bmw will be releasing a whole new version of the m3 some time in 2005. Should I just buy the M3 or take a chance with a Cayenne? used

i dont think the m3 will be released in 2005, more like 2006, so you have nothing to worry about unless you want to hold out until 06 to get the v8 m3 theyre working on

honestly in your situation id wait for the new m5, both room 4doors and lots of power, but if thats not in it maybe even a newer 545 or older 540.. however to answer the question at hand, i would personally get the porsche only because of the new baby factor, any other time id say m3 everytime

I dislike the Cayenne. Mostly because its an SUV, but also because it just ins't a porsche. I drove my fathers last week and it was not as much fun as my bimmer. It was faster, but that was it. It was too high, the steering just felt off compared to my bmw, and the interiors use a lot of plastic and vinyl. He actually offered it to me over dinner and I turned it down.

You'd have taken it if it was the turbo, no?

As far as SUVs go, the cayenne is hot. It might look like a big toad but I'd pick one over a Range any day of the week.

Unless, of course, one wanted a truly capable off-road vehicle.

Personally, I think the Cayenne is a betrayal of the Porsche marque - same goes for BMW and the X5.

Naw... If I wanted offroad performance then it would be the cayenne's sister with the big V10!

I agree that the Porker was a bit of a strange move for the company but BMW has a far broader and more diverse product range and to not have a car in one of the most popular sectors in the last couple of years would be crazy!

I think the X5 was a bit of a bridging model between E39 and E60 to give the old 5 a bit of a swan song.... why else would they bring out a new car which looks like the old one? That's just silly.

If I had a bundle of cash then you might see the first XM5 with a charged 4.6i :P

My money's on the Disco' when off-roading gets really nasty.

The Porker makes no sense to me in terms of what Porsche is about, historically. I would feel like a badgehound driving one, but that's just me.

The X5 is laughable with regard to real off-road capability and offers precious little more usable cargo space than what my wife's recently-traded 330i had. By the time we put our twin stroller in the back of an X5, all usable luggage space was gone. We were no better off than in the E46. The X5 makes zero sense to me other than the fact that Americans seem to be hell-bent on driving SUVs, regardless of their real-world usefulness. Which has been good for BMW's bottom line - they sell like hotcakes.

The benifit the BMW X5 has is it is (test proven time and time again) the safest vehicle on the American road today. And there is no lack of power with the N62 under the hood. I wouldn't personally take it off road, but it's a fun vehicle to drive SAV or not.

the BMW M3 is better at the straight but the AUDI S4 is better at the coner.

"chungaa1 Posted: hello, how about the VW Toureg?? "

What other 4x4s were developed along side the cayenne and built with a V10 diesel? (I was talking about the toureg when I mentioned the cayenne sister car)

There is no M-X5....... (unless you want a cheap mazda)

I think Porsche realise this now. They had a 4 door in development and have put that project on hold until 2007.

We all know the X5 wasn't build to offroad but on road it is a tall 5 series. It hit the bullseye of the market it was aiming for.

The biggest X5 you can get is the 4.8iS (360bhp)....

^ Me neither.

Some people are convinced that they are safer due to the hight and weight.

I'm convinced that they need a slap in the mouth.

If you can't drive and park properley in the first place.... why get a bigger car which is more dangerous to other raod users, is more difficult to control, blocks everyones vision on the road and offers no more room or comfort than the saloon version?

Usually the anser to this question is: Because I'm a woman
