yes you can stick a m3 engine in a 318is. and u can also stick a m3 engine in a e30 325i/is/e if you want. you shouldnt have to do much modding. but you need a m3 tranny, drive shaft, and differntal. and the new s54(e46 m3) engine will not fit into e36 chassies.

This is something I have seen many times. Where I live in Tampa, FL there are a few. Jared, a friend of mine has a white 318 TI with a E36 M3 motor and a nice T66 turbo. There's also another guy we know with an E30 with an E36 M3 motor.
All it takes is time and money..

Hey people, I'm new here, and I was looking to put an M3 e36 engine into a 318is
a friend of mine said it'd be too much trouble, that I'd have to replace my whole dashboard (wtf?), steering wheel (into an m3 one) and many electrical things
is this true? I know electronics and engine go hand in hand, but to replace the dashboard? that sounds odd just to put an engine that fits the chassis

Naw. The motor will physically fit without much fuss. You would need to run a 320i brake booster though to clear the motor.
The main reason people have been unsuccessful doing an S54 swap is because the S54's engine electronics are very fussy and it would be extremely hard getting the motor and chassis to cooperate.
