M3 Engine Failure VIN lookup?

I am familiar with the unofficial web sites (yoy & roadfly) and all the great information on those sites. I was wondering if there is some sort of search I can do specific to the E46 engine failure problem? If the engine had the oil pump service done by BMW, or it was replaced, would this work show up on carfax? Will BMW give you the information just for asking? Im in the market for an 01-02 M3 and am looking private, retail BMW and retail other.

i think only service records will help you this way. carfax only gives major problems like crashes and whatnot.

yeah contact a BMW service center and ask for the records. they should be able to help you out
