So I came to ask a question, and I realize that I'm asking this in a biased forum so I'll be asking the same question in other forums. That being said please be as honest and fair as possible.
So 3 years ago I bought a project car to achieve under 13 seconds in the quarter mile and decent handling. It was an 88 pontiac fiero and I was rebuilding a 350 to put in the back.
2 kids (1 a surprise) and 1 more on the way (a surprise as well) later, I don't have time for this project anymore....so here are my goals:
1) 4 doors to haul kids when I need to.
2) under 13 seconds (12.99 is fine, I'm just goal driven and my goal was under 13)
3) decent handling
4) daily driver
5) under $20k total
So can this be done with a 98 4 door stick M3? If so does anyone here know if can be done with an Audi S4? And I'm sure you'll all tell me the M3 is better (I'd expect to hear the oposite from the audi forum), but I want to hear it anyway...all of the reasons why it's better. In addition, I'm not really familiar with Benz, so is there an option there...or any other brand?
And lastly, what kinds of mods would be required to get an M3 to under 13 seconds while remaining a daily driver?
If your asking about an M3.. this is in the wrong forum... and you could probably pick a used M up for about 13-6K... and use the other 4 k to get her going... its possible but a lot of work...
Hey tanks for stopping in, if you do wind up trying to reach your goal with an M3, be sure to stick around. You really can learn a lot here.
Yours is a vexing project. Either the 1998 M3 or a 2000 S4 could be had for a shade under 20K with enough left over for a tiny bit of tuning. A few bolt ons added to each would get you to 13.6 or so. Now if you had say $23K or so, I think you could probably get to your goal with either. Not gonna say which I'd rather have (I think you know), but the the S4 is a fantastic car.
I love the M....and will love my M when it comes soon.
But a 4 door M3 is not any where near 13 in the quarter...its just not...its ment for top speeds...and if your having kids in your car....with that perfectly engineered engine infront of you...might not be sucha good mix.
My 2 door m3...gets the quarter done in like...14.4 somthing like that...but its 0-60 is about 5.6 and with all ur bolt ons some where around 5.3-5.4
I love the M you will too...
This isnt really a Bias forum either...bmw guys here arnt sales men...we tell you what we love...and we tell you what sucks...we bitch about bmw's just as much as the person next to you....after all...we drive the things everyday.
Cam kit for the M costs 2,999 and adds 57 hp i believe....for being an NA thats the best you can do...plus all ur bolt ons will add about 20 hp.
so ud be pushing around 307 realistic hp...
Have a good day
-M till the end

you can get an M3/4 (its an m3 with 4 doors) they are avalible, however reaching your goal of under 13 seconds with a budget of only 20k which includes the car is not possible i think, as im sure your aware, to get you to shave a good second and a half off your 1/4 mile time will be lots more hp that the american e36 m3 will have. so in honest consideration, you may wanna look elsewhere for a car that is capable of those figures. however in the M3 defence for that price range your gonna get the best handling car, and one of the most respected cars on the road.

even with 307hp, thats not close to enough to get under 13 seconds just so you know also thats not to the wheels those figures would be to the crank, (not to rub it in :P )
ha ha Furious, I was lookin at this thread earlier, and was thinkin the same thing. I thought it was funny how that link to Turner's performance kit listed it as a mod to attain 295hp, and yet they inlcude a dyno sheet (which obviously shows RWHP).
I totally agree, as I stated before you definately need more than $20K to reach sub 13sec.1/4mi. At least this guy sounds like he doesn't wanna just settle for a car that would reach these numbers, it sounds like he might just want a good car overall. Settle for mid 13's in an ///M and try to set goals for lateral G's
reasoning? its simple , 1/4 mile is for the movies, anyone knows that real true speed is at the track. for example. take the lotus elise with only 1987hp 133lb-ft, it beats sooo many cars around the track with 2 or even 3 times its power. i think its lateral gs is 1.0 -1.2 lateral g's depending on where you research.
Im not sure where you got the price at 1300 for cam kit...I just see them for 2,999....and yes im aware its not to the crank as well..im just saying it APPARENTLY gives 57 some odd hp.
Try too rub it in all you want
And to clarify I believe i said...to get on your WAY to 13 seconds the cam kit will come handy...We all know it doesnt matter how much hp you have...it just doesnt give you a 1/4 mile time under 13 handed too you on a silver platter.

To all the hater's

Umm, {here} or{here} upgrading injecttors and intake is merely an option, it's not manditory. Alpine wuz talking about cams.
Ok, so what's a realistic budget to get an M3/4 to sub 13's?
I did a quick search in my area with autotrader and found an M3/4 stick listed for $15k and I'm assuming with a little more searching I could find one for $14k or a little lower.
I think I could probably reach my stated goals with an Evo Lancer or WRX, but they're a little too ricey for me....I want something that is a nice daily driver...heh...I want everything!!
The second car I owned was an Audi 80 4 cylinder, it wasn't fast but it was very nice to ride in on 1 1/2 hour trips to and from college 1 or 2 weekends a month...The exact oposite of the first car I owned...a '74 Nova (man I wish my wife would let me have another one of those)...
I haven't done any research on Jag S-types, are they fast at all? I know they are built on the frame of the ford contour, which kind of scares me a little.
And one more question, what's the difference between a 325i and the M3? is it just the engine and suspension and body effects? or is it the frame as well? I read a post on here that I think was saying something about putting an M5 engine into and M3? can this engine be put into a 325 and what kind of cost are we talking?
I know I'm asking a lot of questions, I just want the right car for me.
PS. I do enjoy the feeling of going around curves fast, and I don't indend to spend a lot of time at any track, curved or straight, I just enjoy the feeling of being pushed back into my seat more than the feeling of being pushed laterally around a curve.
You stated your budget was $20K, could you remain within that budget with a WRX Sti or a Mitsu EVO?

If you can, and you don't care about amenities or build qualtiy, you might look to them. With their superior parts such as a decently bolstered leather seat, he ///M cars make one fine alternate ways from point A to B based on their smile factor in the twisties. If you are content to enjoy stoplight to stopligh acceleration the aforementioned will give you more bang for the buck.
