I am considering purchasing a 1997 M3. As I type it is at my mechanic's getting checked out but I wanted to check with the BMW experts here to see what you all think about a few things. It currently has 115,000 miles on it, excellent exterior and interior condition and drives solidly. So my questions are (and I realize I'm asking for opinions here):

- How long might I expect this engine to last? Is it just unreasonable to buy a vehicle with this many miles on it?
- What are the most likely high cost maintenece items I should expect with this many miles on the engine?
- What would you consider to be a reasonable price (assuming a good report from the mechanic)?

Thanks in advance for any opinions you feel like sharing.

Welcome

the US M3 engines are very similar to the other M52 variants (2.5L and 2.8L) which have a excellent reliabilty history. of course, a meticulously maintained engine could last millions of miles, but realisticly, changing the oil every 3-5k miles, keeping up with maintenance, and taking care of any oil leaks or irregualr consumption could help your engine last alsmost as long as you want it to.

Thanks for your replies and the welcome msg!

The mechanics report came back with only a few minor items. He said that the car looks well maintained and solid. So...last night I struck a deal with the seller and am now am a BMW owner The few small items that need repair will be done by the seller before I pick up the car next week. It's going to be so hard not being able to drive it this weekend! I'll be sure to post a picture here when I get it.

Thanks for your help,
Caryn
