It mentions something about the European software....are there any other advantages to the Euro spec software other than a better launch? Does installing the European software void the car's warranty?
I was under the impression that the euro M3 launched at 3500rpm and the US launches at 1800rpm or something. I don't know why there is such a difference.
I think the stuff about voiding warranty is crap too. Why make it a feature otherwise? (If you take more than 5 corners per day it voids the warranty, type of bollocks)
The new M5 has an even better launch facility whereby using the initial launch from stop will incite the engine to shift from 1st to 2nd exactley at the redline! (8250) I can't wait to see one do that!

I tried that whole thing and it didn't do shit. I was mad cuz I was excited about an awsome start and it just goes into second and kinda goes like usual.

Like it says in the article quoted above (last paragraph)
Quote:
For lucky drivers of this hot car, here's how: Switch off the stability system and select shift program six. Switch the engine to sport mode. With the hand shifter in drive, hold it in the downshift position and press the gas pedal. The engine will rev to the preprogrammed rpm and hold. Now release the shifter. The car will launch forward violently and the engine's revs will climb quickly, so be prepared to upshift.

Yeah, kind of like tiptronic. Have a look around the board, there are loads of thread discussing the evolution of BMWs switchable auto...
(I'm specifically talking about the paddle shift box here)

MrWhiteG:
It's been raining here over the last few days.
So, I turned off the DSC but forgot to turn Sport mode on (yeah I know, silly), put it into S6 mode, and held the SMG shifter into DOWNSHIFT (minus) mode while depressing the gas.
Only held at 2000rpm, but I broke the rear wheels free, and had a great forward jolt. I backed off right away since I was stopped at a light and there was traffic infront of me.
Next test will be on a nice day with the sport mode on. My gut feeling is that it will not make much of a difference.
I just tried this today. Although it's better than simply flooring the gas, I was not at all impressed. It's still kinda handy if you feel like smoking a car at a spotlight, but the PopSci article definitely hyped it up a bit more than it really is. Now, the European version...that's a diff. story...
