How loud is loud when it's VANOS noise

My 98 e36 m3 has a lot of clicking in the engine. My auto-tech tells me that it is normal and that i should listen to the earlier bmw's. Saying that they are even louder. Still though i would like to hear from some of the fellow forum dwellers. I want to trust my Tech But it just sounds so LOUD! I'm kinda worried and curios. Thanks...

Vanos noise sounds like marbles rattling around in a coffee can, and not clicking. A totally healthy Vanos is pretty quiet--I should know, I replaced mine about 10,000 miles ago.
