High mileage e46 M3

I'm trying to get into an e46 M3 or an e60 M5. I stumbled across an alpine white '04 M3 for $11k. That is a pretty good deal for my region (Seattle). But....it has 190,000 miles.

Is this a red flag? I've never had a car, let alone a performance car, with that many miles on it. Will it need a new engine or massive overhaul soon?

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Welcome to Bimmerwerkz.

Their is nothing wrong with a higer milage E46 as long as it has all the maintenance records to acompany it. If he wants $11,000 but cant prove that he ever did a single oil change then I would walk away. As with ANY car purchase, always have it inspected prior to purchase at the shop of YOUR choice.

The E46 M3 is regarded as the ultimate driving enthusiats car. The S54 engine in them can handle massive boost pressures and horsepower. Killing one is pretty hard, but possible. Pre-2003 models had subrframe issues. In 2003 this was fixed and all 2003/04/05 model years are unaffected by this. The cooling system is a bit of a weak point so if he hasnt had it overhauled then that will be something you may have to look into.

Hope this helps.
