I have heard genuine talk that Motorsport tried one prototype car with the M1's 277 bhp 24 valve 3.5 in the e12, but in the end they chose the 2 valve 218 bhp because they thought that was enough. At the time the 6 series had only just got the 3.5 in Europe, and the most powerful 5 series was the 528i, so I suppose if you were tootling along in a 50 bhp VW Golf 1100 then 218 bhp was mighty indeed.
