So I decided to suck it up and get something finally. I have always wanted a M3 or M5, more so an M5. There seems to be a lot less of them on the streets IMO and I have found 3 within 200 miles of where I'm at and are $25,000, low miles, great condition, original owners who happen to be old guys, so I'm thinking they haven't been ragged on too bad already. There are also several M3s in my area, this one got my attention the most, rather then white, black, or red ones:

It has 40k on it, original owner, and the guy wants $24,000 for it. But I'm 6'2" and I have clients with me a lot so I'm thinking a 4door would be better, any objections to that? From what I remember there isn't much room in the back of the coupe anyways, and being that my seat would be pretty far back that takes a lot away.

As far as it goes M5, there is 2 black ones, one with black interior the other has caramel, which I like a lot. Question is does a lot of stuff rub onto the caramel? I'm thinking that the caramel leather will probably need a good wipe down (zymol leather treatment) daily? weekly? Carmax also has a red, I like red but red doesn't seem like a sedan color, and then there is a silver one, typical black interior and owned by a younger guy with around 50k for $26,500. And of course Carmax wants $28,000 for the one they have.

The other black one doesn't have tinted windows and has caramel leather. The silver one is tinted and black leather, and the red one has no tint with black leather.

So, opinions please:
Gas mileage of both?

Estimated cost of monthly or annual repairs?

Does the M5 tend to have more problems then the M3? IMO you see more v8s breaking down then I6,V6, or 4bangers. And how are BMWs with 40k to 60k? Whats the typical "breaking in" point for a BMW?

I dont plan on doing any crazy modifications, maybe CSL wheels, if they fit a M5, and MAYBE a few bolt ons, nothing insane.

Do those prices seem far?
-M3:40k for $24,000
-M5:
-63,000 for $26,000 (w/caramel)
-60,000 for $26,000 (w/black leather and upgraded nav(MK4 16:9),stealthone,icelink) and what the hell is that??
-66,000 for $28,000 (from carmax)

There is also another M5 I just found it has 150,000 "highway miles" for $23,000obo, should I stay away from that or is 150,000 on a BMW nothing? All help is appreciated, thanks!

I have a 2000 E39 M5 with 75k miles. Very happy with it. So far repairs have been so easy and cheep that the extended warrentee has been a "waste" of money as the warrentee has cost more then all the repairs combined.

There's a ton of info on the E39 M5 on this forum. The things that do go wrong all seem to have very easy solutions and with good maintance is a very reliable car IMO.

I have no personal experience with E46 M3's so I cannot make any comparison. However I'll say this. The E39 M5 is the best looking BMW ever. :-)

M5, black/black. As sweet as the M3 is, with clients, the M5 would be a great way to go...and if you need to convince them to buy something, just drive harder and scare the hell out of them!

M5 is great for clients. Both cars are beautiful, so you can't go wrong.
