Angry E36 M3 Low Pitch Knock

My M3 has developed a low pitch knock that follows engine rpm. It appears to be coming from left side/rear of the engine. Any ideas?

Can you tell the difference if it's an engine internal knock or something in the engine compartment that might be loose?

hmm...if its internal it could be piston slap. Thats usually a low pitch tone. Can you tell if its towards the top or the bottom of the engine.
