Hello all,
I'm new to the Forum and BMWs (I've been a Corvette guy and I've got a few friends with older 911s), we've all done a fair bit of work on our cars ourselves (up to and inlcuding things like frame-off restorations) and can handle most engine work from a technical perspective. The reason I'm posting is, we've got an opportunity to purchase a 2002 M5 for between US$10K-$15K. Its is visually perfect, and has about 8000 miles on it, but it was stolen and the motor is completely wasted.
I cringe to think about the cost of a replacement motor and trans from BMW, so I thought maybe someone here may have done a teardown/buildup of one of these cars and could give some pointers on relative difficulty (I.E, "Its like a 5.7L rebuild with more expensive parts" or "You're F-ed in the head"), expense, availability of parts from non-BMW sources, etc. Really, any information would be appreciated. Anyone who can recommend a private mechanic (or is one) anywhere in MD, PA, DE, or NJ would be appreciated as well.
Thanks,
Stan
would you be buying a used or new engine? if you have the cash get the new engine because then BAM!!!!! you have a brand new m5 and that would be a great thing to wake up to every day
I bought a 1992 325i with a wasted engine, I found a 93 (vanos) with 80,000 miles on it for a great deal, I talked to quite a few shops and got bids and opinions.
My experience: What a total ****ing nightmare.
Cost 3X what I estimated (and I tried to over estimate) and it has been in and out of the shop for so many little things for a while there (everything is ok now... I hope) I thought I would be driving rental cars forever!
Of course, it was a much older car... I probably wouldn't have minded if I had a nice M5 after all that muahahaha.
