Hello everyone... I'm new here and I just wanted to say hey and tell you a little about myself before I ask of you this favor...
I'm 18... freshman in college... loves cars- lives in New Hampshire, Friends with multiple BMW owners, ferrari owners, etc., going into an appartment sophomore year and i am in need of a new set of wheels.
Currently I have nothing except for some cash to spend on a car.
I've been in contact with a few M5's in Hong Kong, as well as while at Automotive Specialist down in Tynsborough, MA... I have not had much experience with the M3.
Anyways, I want a car. I have roughly 50,000 give or take a few grand.
I've seen M3's for as much as 60,000 on ebay and I have spotted some M5's on there as well (more used) for a little cheaper.
Basically I'm looking for something to get a few people (not necessarily comfortably) to school... I like driving fast and enjoying myself (not with the radio)... I'd love to have a stick shift.
I like the titanium grey colour as well as plain old black, or maybe even some funky colors.
But I just wanted to you your experiences with these two cars and what you might suggest.
Thanks very much!

Hey Ryan,

First off Welcome! second, can i just say WOW, u are 18 in college and are looking for a car for 50K! damn! lol. im 19 and i just bought a 1995 M3 and love the car to death. Before u decide what u are going to buy you should decide what u want.... I . E. do u want something u can pile 5 full adults into comfortably (an M5) or do u want something a little smaller and sportier (M3) personaly from what u have writen i would suggest an M3. Then the next question is what style BMW would u like (Im a personaly fan of the E36 style) I would suggest not buying a car off of ebay i mean you can get lucky but at the same time you could get very unlucky, i would recomend finding a car and driving to see it. If u really have 50k to drop you could make a rediculously sick E36 M3... u know buy the car, slap on some beefy breaks a killer supercharger some new internals and a chip and that car would destroy most anything on the roads! ok this is my rambeling .02 hope it helped a bit. O! what part of NH are u in? i go to school at Keene State college. if u want to check out my M3 let me know we can get together sometime!

I attend UNH actually...
I like the new style- I was thinking a 2003/2004 M3. That titanium color of it just gets me everytime.
I dont want ot mod it much- I like to keep things straight, the only thing you would see me do is get 5% on the windows (just a thing i do). I was thinking also about a lease of a new one or just to buy it outright. Thanks!

Hutch, PM me and maybe we can get together and go for a spin or something, thanks!

Personally, I wouldn't spend that much on any car, but the E46 M3 is a very good choice, a genuine 911 rival but more practical. You could pick up good examples with warranty with your budget, but I would wait until the new M3 arrives before I would get the E46 M3, hence I'm saving my pennies by purchasing the E36 model.

Definitely do not buy off Ebay, take your time to look a few over, then haggle!!!

Well, ive contacted a few dealerships that are selling on ebay in regards to just getting a purchase sometime in the up and coming future which wouldnt be through ebay... When would the new M3 be coming out, because im sure that the value of the 2003/2004 models would definately drop by then.
Any information on that?
Thanks again!!!

The U.K. forthcoming 3-series will be lauched here in May, so I would guess we'll have to wait a year or so before we get a signifcant drop in price. However, the E39 M5 is starting to come down. It's got silkier power than M3's, more comfy too, but I still prefer the E46 M3 (titanium or black).

yea, that titanium color is absolutely amazing looking.
I've talked to a fellow down in ft. lauderdale as well as a very nice man out in LA and they suggested to go with a 2004 or 2005- i can get a 2005 competition m3 with about 800 miles on it for 51,000 plus shipping...
the m5 is still lurking in the distance though- its about the same price, a little more mileage. but what about maintenance on those... is it more expensive than an m3 or about the same or what?

I would say so, along with the running cost also. You're young, a M3 is the better choice in my opinion. Oh, I wouldn't go for the soft top either, somehow don't suit cars with back seats. If you want driving pleasure without regards to passengers and sacrificing a little practability, have a look at the M -Coupe, or the Z4,

k, enough quoting, my eyes are burning...
im pretty open as to convert or coupe- i wont be carrying many large people in the back... if i need to carry lots of people i have a lease on a jeep until winter 2006/2007 so that's no concern i guess now... does the soft top weigh much more? any of you try both?
the thing is for me, i live in a cold climate- but when it gets warm there is nothing better than the open air- convert... yet when it snows, obviously i want to be bundled up... CHOICES CHOICES!!!!
Thanks for all the help guys, i will keep you all updated

Sounds like you should just buy my M5, and fix all these problems!

Nothing's sweeter than 275/35 R18's on the back. SO WIDE!!!

Ryan, I'm on the hunt for bumper plugs too. I took off the front plate mount seconds before taking the pictures I had sent to you.
