Responding to concerns from E46 M3 owners about premature engine failures, BMW NA has announced a corrective service action (they had previously extended the warranty). It covers M3 converts and coupes with a S54B32 engines built between Oct. 1, 02 and Feb. 28, 02. If the car is within the affected production range, BMW will (at no charge):

-replace the engine pump
-replace connecting rod bearings ("as a precautionary measure," BMW says)
-reprogram the engine-control module with the latest software, including improved cold-start characteristics.
-change the oil

M3 owners should check with their dealers to determine if their cars are eligible for the work.

no it doesnt. Its a normal oil setup, with the exception being that the oil is located at the front lower and not the entire length of the oil pan, this confused me the first time i saw it leading me to believe it was dry sump. Bmws goin down the toilet. E46 is the first sign of the fall of the roman empire, if you know what i mean. The engines are nice and all but the body.... to big and bulky. The engines are getting problems from having incredibly high stock compression and very close tolerences and clearences. Everything gets burned up easy =\

E30 days everything was much more solid and loose. (very <_< ) low compressions were used and the engines almost never burned up. Same with e36.

i have been vindicated.

from page 6 of the August 2003 Roundel:
<!--QuoteBegin-Roundel

You're right; it's a misprint. The service affects M3s built between Oct. 1, 2001, and Feb. 28, 2002. We regret the error. --SC[/quote]
