2009 M3 Oil Level Indicator

Among the many electrical issues with this vehicle, I'm now experiencing the oil level indicator either not working (flat line), a clock face going round and round for 5-10 minutes, then finally working, telling me to add a quart of oil. As there is no dip-stick, I did erroneously add oil. Took it to the dealer, they said there was a "recall", requiring them to upgrade the software in my control unit. Took 4 hours, the oil level indicator is still misbehaving. Any one else experiencing this? Any advice on how to fix it? I suspect a faulty oil level sensor. Also, any insight on why BMW engineers opted to eliminate the oil dip stick? Thanks.

Davidho, I have a similar problem. It just started on my 50K+ '08. It has indicated to add a quart, then the next day it is only 1/4 down. Currently on a road trip and after an hour on the road, it said to add a quart, after stopping for gas, it as back to 1/4 low. Any thoughts from anyone would be great.

After another trip to the BMW dealer, the oil level indicator is working as designed. The oil level indicator takes 5-10 minutes to start reading when the engine is cold. The "clock-face" and "flat-line" are normal as the engine heats up. The reason is the oil has to heat up to 180F or so before the oil level indicator can get a reading.
If you're getting "add oil" errors, I suggest you ask about a software upgrade.
