Hi...I am new to this site and I was hoping I could get some advice from all the knowledgable BMW people out there. What are the pros and cons to owning these two cars? Apart from the size of the two cars, which is a better car in terms of reliability and performance?? I would really appreciate the input. Thanks!
i think the BMW M5 and THE M3 is not the same type of car, one is coupe and one is a four door saloon. M3 is a two adult car, because the two back seat is not very comfortable for adults, so a M5 is a family car, it's like a sport sedan.
Looking at these stats, I would probably say that the M5 is faster because it gets 0-60 at the same speed as the m3 but also has more horses but I don't know for sure...
Either way, both cars are awesome and will be great cars to own. And they both receive a 9.4 rating on edmunds
I love the M5. Its just a nicer vehicle, and more luxurious. Unlike the M3 its not fully loaded stock. All M5s are fuly loaded. The options are rear sunshade and upgraded speakers. The M5 has crazy topend. I like the idea of a Sedan that does low 13s in the 1/4mi.
The M3 is a focused performance car. The M5 is a luxury/performance car.
The M5 will have taken a bigger hit from depreciation and won't lose it's value as quickly. The M3 is fairly new and likely to lose a bit more of it's value.
Fuel consumption is similar in both, as is performance.
The M5 is the daddy in my opinion.

Thanks for the great info, all! Assuming I go with the M5, are there particular features or options I should look for? I have one in mind that has blk/blk with the luxury package. The car has 29K miles.
Every M5 is pretty much loaded. It was the flagship of the company and had everything.
I suppose the only 'options' are audio and satnav based...
Just make sure you get the colour you want inside and out and that it's in perfect nick with a full dealer service history.
You have an eviable choice to make my friend....... either choice will be fantastic, especially if it's the M5.
29k is perfect.
Good luck!

yeah if you are into all the bells and whistles, which an m3 would have too but not as many as an m5 and you are planning on hauling lots of peopke and maybe going fast in a straight line and not autox per say, then go with the m5 but if you want a sports car, that can be pretty much as fast, but handle really really good, and still be pretty loaded go for them3, persoanlly i would take a new m3 over a new m5!
Are you under the impression that the M5 doesn't handle? It corners like a greyhound!!!
Long term reliability: how long is a BM V8 going to run? (in a demis rousos style) *Forever and ever and ever and ever.......*
The auto box isn't a deciding factor either. (Alpina B10)
In the end it comes down to personal preference..... mine is 400bhp!

Thanks for the great advice all...I went for the '00 M5 and brought it home yesterday. I am very happy with my choice! It only hs 27K on it and it actually still smells new!
One thing I noticed is that it sounds a bit like a "diesel" car when it warms up...and has a little bit engine flutter type of a sound. Of course, I put premium gas in it and I checked that there were no outstanding recalls that need to be dont to it (i.e. VANOS). Any thoughts on this?
Good man..... good choice!!! Don't forget to post some pictures if you can.
It shouldn't sound like a diesel but it's a meaty engine..... as i'm sure you've found out!
