Ok, well here is the deal. For the past couple of months I have been looking for a good EM to get for my 99 E36 M3. I have a very good mechanic, who is BMW cert. and works at an independent BMW dealer. So, I figured, why not talk to him. This was about 3 months ago. I asked him about the AA software, and some others, and he said they were ok. He then told me to wait on it for a little while, because he just ordered a laptop (EM computer) straight from Germany that was said to be pretty good, as far as performance gains. So I got back to him about a week later, and he said it was amazing. He said on a 330Ci, completly STOCK, they got about 30-40HP, if i remember correctly. After hearing that I was pretty excited, and he said he would be happy to do it on my car. After about a week or two, of trying to find time in his very hectic schedual, he called me and told me to wait for about another month or so.....my first reaction was.... ...but then he told me why. He said that he has had this new idea in how to tune the car, which he has tried on another friend of his, who has the same exact car as me. Now, keep in mind this guy has a dyno in his shop, so im sure he isnt guessing, but he said that with this new "idea" he was able to get the power of a supercharged engine out of this friends car (stock) YEs....about 340-350 HP.... .....i know what you guys are thinking..... how the hell is that possible....no wait....that is impossible. yes i kno...i thought the same exact thing, especially with a car which isnt moded. SO, i waited another month, because he wanted to make sure that nothing goes wrong with the car he did it to. It turns out, NOTHING WENT WRONG@!!....and he did it to 4 other cars, including a 7 series, 5, and a Z4.
Well it turns out that this laptop cost about 40 grand to begin with, and it is different from most other EM computers, in that you can play with the maps of the car using 3D imaging, and graphs. Heres the kicker....one main reason for this extreme power gain is because he did not get the machine approved by DOT. Apperently they would have put a bunch of restriction codes on it.
SO, now that nothing has gone wrong with the other cars, he is going to to it to mine, hopefully in the next few weeks. Trust me guyz, I am as skeptical as you, but....why on earth with this guy lie to me, (he is actaully a good friend of mine now, since he has been my mechanic for the past 5 yrs).
Well, lemme know what you guys thinks....ever heard of such a thing?? I will get more info and how exactly he does this when I get mine done, and hopefully i can print out a dyno sheet or something to show u guyz.
It sounds all good. I am really skeptical however if you can get those kind of gains on a proven DYNO machine then a road trip might be in order!

I've never heard of that, so ofcourse I'm skeptical but hey keep us updated and I too will be headed over to your mechanic's shop! GOOD LUCK I hope everything goes as planned B)

Well, i am not sure how much it is gonna cost yet, but the place is in on th west side in california.
Hopefully he will have time on weds night to do it, cuz he works all day, then teaches a class at a BMW dealer. Hopefully by weds, (if not, i think by sat.) i will have more answers for you guyz....
you never mentioned any part of what he is actually moddifying to gain this power. The fuell to air ratio? How much more can you change on the same amount of air entering the engine so that you arent running rich.
Also, his laptop is 40 grand? Maybe the software all in it with all the parts to connect and redo a ECU, but not just the laptop. Also, i'm sure any car company out there spends far mroe than 40 grand and there's a reaosn they havent invented it first.
but provide a dyno and the reasoning and you got me sold.

Not to be rude or anything, I'm not buyin' it. Just off of the ECU it isn't possible. I've built plenty of engines and have done quit a few turbo setups and came up with some wild creations. I could see 20 tops without doing anything to the engine. Stand alone cant' even match that and thats the best system out there for modifiying your maps. Even with some minor mods it wouldn't be close, and by mods I mean things like gasket matching., smothing intakes better, ground wires, running less accessories like clutch fans and AC. using intake spacers....blah blah..Anyway I have done tons of little things that takes many hours of work to squeeze out one extra pony on cars. and have only seen minor gains. I'm not saying I don't believe. I just need more info. You provide that and I'll buy into it......other then that I stick with putting a nice big turbo and lots of fuel to get my extra power

you'd be surprised what ECU can do
anyone saw a video of an sti that had the same boost, but with modifying ECU, the dyno went from like 300hp to 600hp? it was on the forums one time i think
yeah, a lot of things are possible

I'd like to see that forum post, I highly doubt it.....it's a turbo car, huge diference from a non turbo car......the boost is controlled by the ECU on that paticular car, I had a 1.8t vw and got my ECU flashed, it turned from 180bhp to 240whp, before I futher modified it, then with the turbo upgrade I lowered the boost put a more efficient I.C. and added some injectors and before i new it I was dynoed at 340whp .but hey I could be wrong. Definitly curious though...I would love to see that link. maybe a can learn a new trick or two

i still dunno, after talking with other i have to agree i think its near impossible, i wanna see dyno videos to prove it, reason being is HP gain is done through air/fuel mixture, you can only suck so much air and have so much fuel with stock injectors, too rich you burn the exhaust valves too lean you burn the intake valves. it just doesnt seem plausable
