Transmission warning light

Hi there,
My automatic trans light is on and the power is sluggish especially when going up the slope, occasionally jerking and stuck at 3rd gear when hot. Can anybody suggest on how to check the transmission's fluid level? or suggest other possible problem. TQ.

What car do you have? What's the mileage on it? When was the last trans service done?........The cheapest & most practical thing to do 1st, is a trans service, fluid & filter......

TQ Johnny for your respond. My car is 525i E39 1999 milage at 120k km. I had change the oil about a year ago including the filter. Anyway i found the problem. The fluid was overheated, created by the auxillary fan which was not functioning properly. I hope my diognastic is right.

FCP! I was hoping you were exclusive to MVS! : / lol When you "changed" your oil...do you mean you flushed the ATF or did you do a drain and fill?
