I am sooo far from teh expert but for pictures you need to open and use a photo sharing account on, for example, a site like Imageshack or photobucket.
Then you upload your pictures (you can use teh site to resize ir whatever) then click on them in the Imageshack site and then paste teh "hotlink" into your sig (or a posting or whatever) and PRESTO! you've got a posted picture. Hope this simplistic answer is helpful until a big shot mod or admin posts a better one. Cheers.
