Car keeps running with no key

Hello,

Hoping for some help with this, I can't find too much on the internet and all the local shops are closed today. My 95 740 kept running after the key was removed. My husband drove my car 1 day and broke it! Big believer in DIY and would like to see if this is fixable without having to take it to the garage. I appreciate any & all feedback!

The key/starter switch must be awfully loose. Likely needs replacing.

my 99 z3 2.5L just did that today my girl took the key out and everything was still runnin. did you ever find out what it was?

It's called "dieseling" because thats how a standard diesel engine works. In gasoline engines it usually means that the injectors are leaking instead of closing when the engine is "turned off." Try cleaning them off or replacing them.
