I've done a bit of engine modding to my car but I still can't take my friend's Volvo 850 Turbo. He claims it's 222 whp, which is comparible to mine, but he has the turbo that kicks in after we gain any speed at all and he completely wastes me.
Short of dropping huge money and leaving the na world behind, what else can I do to beat him? I want the fastest car of anyone I know. hehe
I'm debating power pulleys for my next step, as they seem to have a nice return for minimal cost... except I'm a bit scared of the alternator pully... will I still have the power in my stereo I have now? And what if I eventually put an aftermarket system in it?
n/a - 168 HP - 2.4liter I5
GLT - 190 HP, light pressure turbo (i think 9 psi) 2.4L I5
T5 (labeled "turbo" earlier years) - 222 HP, 11.5 or 12 PSI 2.3L I5
R - 240 HP, 12 PSI i believe. 2.3L I5
i had the R, it took most cars i raced. the car does not have 222 WHP it is at the crank, so he still doesnt have 222 hp at the wheels. but, with a tuned ECU, 3" downpipe, 2.5 or 3" free flowing exhaust, bigger turbo, lighter engine internals, and a high performance cam you can get around 350-400 WHP. cost for all of that is around $4-$5k. i think my 850 was more of an 'ultimate driving machine' than the 7 series, because it was lighter and just sportier overall.
and yes they all were avialabe with manual trannys except for the R, but in canada you could get it with the manual tranny. grrr. turbos with man. trans. is very rare though.
my dad recently test drove an e36 m3, and i went with him..the guy who owned it was a little korean man who also owned a volvo v70R, a wrx, and the m3.
he said that the v70R pushed 280 because he had a performance chip (or sharked?) and a freeflow exaust, for a wagon that thing was very hot.
I raced my friends 2005 S60 T5 and he had his way with me. Turns, straight line you name it....He rapped me in all categories, but fucking Motor Trend said that that BMW this, BMW M3 that and it's all a fucking lie. I hate those kid of people. I just about had it with my fucking 2002 BMW M3. I am going to trade it in and get a Fucking Evo and rappe anyone that comes in my way. I will through in that car $5k and I will rappe anyone and everyone. Fuck fuck fuck BMW for rapping me with this expensive piece of shit.

Please sell your car and buy 'Hooked on Phonics' for yourself. You will benefit most from that.
if you want more power and staying NA, the thing to do would be possibly a new Flywheel, Differential, Port Polish Head. Then, for serious power, you would bore out your engine. that will give you most power with no lag. I dont know companies that do Bore kits for e36 engines.

2002 BMW M3 0-60 IN 4.7 - 5.0 seconds (depending on mode - 4.7 = csl 5.0 = standard and smg)
2005 Volvo S60 T5 0-60 in 6.3-6.9 seconds depending on model (6.3 = t5 sport)
Basically if he beat you you must drive like a fucking retard, a fucked up retard even - even if he's got the t5 sport and you've got the basic m3 you've got 65 more ponies than him plus your car will totally outhandle his. I think the problem is your mate may be a decent driver and you're just a dumb bastard who can't handle more than a pushbike.
PS and why bother to change for an evov111 which is only 0.1 - 0.5 seconds quicker 0-60 than your curent car? the way it seems you drive you won't tell the fucking diffrence!
