My buddy just bought a 98 GST. The thing is pretty fast... almost stock... he's got a stock turbo with a turbo timer and that's about it.

if he only has a turbo timer then its stock, timer is used to cool down the turbo before shutting off the engine. Instead of looking like a dumbass in your car you can just leave.

well, he found a whole nother way to look like a dumbass.
Apparently a few days ago he was in phillipsburg and went through a stop sign to make a turn and ended up clipping someone's back end.
To his credit, the stop sign was pretty well obstructed by a tree, however, he doesn't have a liscence.... so he's pretty screwed anyway.

He's going to.. but the fine for that pales in comparison to the 500-700 + another year suspension for driving without a liscence.
Thankfully the car was insured... unfortunatley he's not on the policy so he can't make a claim for the repairs.

I raced a DSM a while back in my wife's '94 Volvo 850 T-5 wagon from 2'nd gear roll. I could tell he had a big nasty turbo on there but I don't think he had it properly tuned because I rolled him up pretty handily with my wife in the car! I slowed back down after he was back there a way... just incase he wasn't really trying or something. We hit it off again from about 35mph and I immediately pulled 7 or 8 lengths but I was expecting him to come flying up on me with some after some crazy turbo lag... nope! I just stayed in it up to about 120 and he just kept getting further and further back. Dumb kids and their daddy's money! Why buy a huge turbo and not tune for it? Must have been pretty embarrasing to get rolled up by a station wagon, especially when my wife was laughing in his face!
