My mom has a 96 m3 coupe and the other day she was driving and a rock hit it underneath and screwed up her water pump and some other things(shes getting it fixed). She has been wanting to get an e46 for awhile even though she loves her e36 or we are thinking of maybe a 99 e36 so she has something a bit newer. I went with her to test drive the e46 today and it was like night and day compared to her car. The handling on the e36 IMO is 100X better than the e46 m3 n . The e46 felt identical to my car but way faster. The steering wasnt nearly as night as her e36, the clutch was loser than mine also. The shifting was def shorter on the e46 and the brakes were very sensitive. It was a convert. We have yet to test drive the coupe because all they had out there was the convert. please tell me what you think of both, pros and cons.
i heard that the suspension wasnt as good on the e46, but it has faster straight line speed. if you live in the canyons or whatnot i would go for a 99 m3, otherwise get the new jaun
so would you say that the e36 m3 is more like a race car with more stiff suspension, and the e46 is more of a luxury car, with softer suspension and such?

exactly...thats what i got out of the test drive today...
I own a 2003 M3 (can't be different from the 2004) and just last weekend I drove an e36 M3 with a custom suspension and some other mods. I think that the e46 was better in almost all aspects.

and the ones who do are most likely watching not driving.
I think the convertible is a major factor, cuz (correct me if im wrong) but it adds weight and makes it less aerodynamic i believe...?.. so that could have affected the handling

yah it would make a difference, but for everyday driving the differences in weight and aerodynamics wouldn't be too noticeable, plus the convertible would just be more fun to have

The convertable is gonna be slower in accleration and also its gonna feel weird while driving. The added weight comes from the extra shit to raise and lower the top, also the body needs more structual support to try and make up for the lack of roof. No convertable (except for supercars) are real sports cars because of this. You get body shake out the ass with any convertable compared to a coupe version of the car. If your mom wants something to cruise around with and needs lots of wind in her face, let her go for it. Or if she wants something a little more composed and a lil better performance tell her to get the coupe... with a sunroof for better air flow through the car, so she still gets some wind in the face and a lil sun....
