I just wanted to share with you the experiences I've had over the past couple days on the autobahn. I want to start off by saying that I never want to leave Germany/Europe to drive in the states again. This weekend, I had my wife in country, and she wanted to go to Paris. It's about a 4.5 hour drive. Now typically, the speed limit is 130 km/h. Until you see the sign in my sig. Then the gloves are off. I did a lot of that this weekend. On my way back from Paris, I had a total trip time of about 3h 45m, and it would have been 3:15 if we didn't have to stop for Gas and a Potty Break. Max speed was 220km/h (136 mph), and I was averaging between 160 and 180 (100-110 mph) the rest of the time. All I can say is that the 1987 E30 Cabrio I was driving was smooth as silk. You don't see too many Hondas out here, but I did see one that was trying to own me around a large curve from one autobahn to the next... pedal to the floor, and the car just stuck. Bye bye, Honda!! (that fucker had rice vinyl on the hood, too..) It was AWESOME.
Oh, and the best part?
IT'S ALL LEGAL!!!
on a side note, I also have noticed that my road rage has all but disappeared.
Turns out, LEGAL speeding is the cure. Sorry guys. :nana

Maybe I was informed of wrongly? Don't you get tickets for tailgating and "insulting" on the autobahn (insult meaning making hand gestures or something of the like to promote frustration amongst fellow drivers)?

Well, for the past two years, I have never seen anyone get pulled over for anything. I have passed polizei on the autobahn, people have tailgated a bit, but a brake check will stop that. But, most of the time I just let them pass, because like it has been said, my road rage has just about disappeared.
By the way, I got down to the Alps in about 3 hours w/ avg. speed of about 200km.

I must disagree, I am less than an hour away (pending traffic). I get up that way pretty quick. There is too much open road. Maybe one of us can make a trip. I do know a few people up that way.
When I graduate, I plan to visit Germany with my family (trip anywhere in the world = grad present) I intend to rent an M5 and blitz the autobahn the whole way. I can't wait.

Hey, ldsbeaker... got a question for you. You've got a 325es, with the 2.7L eta right? What kind of speed do you get out of her on the autobahn?
I wish the roads weren't built of crap around here. You drive down our highways and you practically shake yourself to death doing better than 150km/h. It's a pissoff.
Then again, the speed limit is 100. How do you convince a municipality to fix roads because it's too shakey at 150km/h when you're only supposed to be doing 100?
ghead

Changed the car's name, now it's - Roxanne -1985 325e
Well, I guess technically, 150 kmh is only 93 mph, so you still have a little wiggle room there, unless the speed limit is 100kmh... then you're just out of luck. I would petition them anyways.
As far as my car goes...
I'm deployed to Germany, so I didn't get to bring my car. In my experience in the states, yeah, i get shaken to death anything over 90. I think I've had my car up to a little more than 95 before. Pretty sad.
However, I have driven an E30 Cabrio with the 2.5 engine on the autobahn here. That bitch was a blast!! I drove my fastest in Germany in that thing. 220kmh or 136mph. I drive a Renault Megane Wagon most of the time and frequently drive 100+ mph on our road trips.
I plan to rent the E30 Cabrio again and take it to the Nurburgring VERY soon. I'll post here about it, so stay tuned.

Yap ... even though I have never driven in Germany
But gotta be cool, I guess. Have only driven on Autobahn in Slovenia where I live and in Austria ... theirs are made out of beton : but ours are new, smooth as silk But speed limit is 130 ... my record 190.
Hope my first post wasn´t too long-winded (wanted to intro myself a bit) cos I usually am a talent for waaaaaaaaay longer posts
We got great freeways here in sweden but they are limited to 110km/h:'(
but down in southsweden you've got a two lane freeway on the E4 which has about 1 lane safety zone on each side ...long nicely bent curves...perfect for trying out topspeeds...although you loose your licens at 140km/h:P
...btw...the -94 520i does 240km/h(maxed out...) withouth much prob on 195/65 wheels...
