E30 M3

I'm sure it's not really a rare car persay, however, for me to see one, the first one, is truely an awesome sight. Sure I've seen the E46 M3's and the E36's as well, but an E30, only in pics.

Driving down Rt 78 through Watchung, I see this tiny E30 with a body kit, looked like... ah yes it is! An E30 M3! I stayed behind the dude, just eyeing the car, truely interested in it. It was all black with tinted windows.... there was a yellowish flouresent paper number attached to the rear passenger window "46" I think. Maybe coming from the track? Anyway, I tried to pull up parallel to him and glanced over as much as I could, though the driver didnt' seem interested in what I was doing, he just kept crusing on at below speed limit rates. Just wanted to give him the heads up . Well, I figured I might not want to piss him off so I put more gas and went off and got infront of him gaining distance (not speeding, just resuming the 70+ mph cruise). About 30 seconds later, I see his lights behind me.... Boy can that E30 move, he was cutting in and out of the traffic, just moving! Then came traffic, that didn't stop him, he still went at it. I tried to follow pace (glanced down...85mph), understand fellas that it wasn't racing, just pacing . I was curious to see what he would do. If only my E46 was as short as his E30, he quickly squeezed though other cars and I lost him in the traffic. But still, it was a nice sight.

those really kick ass on the track, EVO calls the E30 M3 the easiest beginner's trackday car ever. They say that a noob with one of those can easily run a tight course with boxters and E36 M3s... and a well modded one can outrun a 427rwhp TT supra... I know because I lost to one.

I got to drive a buddy of mines E30 at a track day about a year ago... wonderful car... it was stock... very beautiful...

I'm not gonna sit here and say my 97M handels better... it was highly modded with Group G springs.. and shortend shocks... very stiff.. built for the track... but stock on stock comparison.. I'd take the E30 any day... even though I own a E36... its like driving a small car.. with a monster inside of it... tickeling your left foot.. and asking for more at the same time. Its just a joy of being alive... pure happiness is the strongest memory from that day....

I'll get one sooner or later.. once the wife lets me... damnit..

1. I was the Supra and I lost to an E30 M3 on the streets of willow springs raceway. I was close on his tail almost the whole way through, except in a few tight corners where I lost sight of his rear end... he never braked once....

2. Longer wheelbase = more high speed stability/more understeer (E36)
Shorter wheelbase = less high speed stability/less understeer (E30)

Weight also plays a huge factor in handling, since the E30 is much lighter than the E36 (2650lbs versus approximately 3100lbs for the E36) the E30 has an obvious advantage. On top of that, the power to handling is much more geared towards insane handling than outright straightline juice. It's really hard to get yourself into trouble with an E30 M3.

I'd really love to have one of those for a track car someday. Such an amazing balance between HP and handling.

I feel sorry for you guys if the e30 M3 is such a rare sight in the US. It's not common over here but we do get to see quite a few of them, most are left as stock thankfully.
A friend of mine had 1 for about 5yrs now, I've driven it through cities & on motorway & i can honestly say it blew me away. Amazing handling & power + envious looks on everyone else's face = happy driver!
