Short story, but was southbound on US41 through the IL boondocks, when I come to a three lane intersection (not including the left turn lane and right turn lane). A couple hundred feet after the intersection, the right lane merges into the middle. Obviously, those who recognize the opportunity in the right vehicle like to sit in the right lane and "pass" the car in the middle.
Anyway. So I'm up at the line, and I check next to me. It's some kind of wrangler with a chick in it, bikini top and chewing bubblegum. She'll let me through without ever seeing me.
Light goes green.
I calmly revv to 4k's to 3rd, easily passing the bubbly girl. As I check my blind spot (safe and fast) to move into the middle lane I hear the high pitched scream of a performance engine. A black Nissan 350z has decided to hotfoot it from his own standstill, and is easily pacing me, and beginning to outpace.
I've seen cops in the area.
So naturally, I stay in third and floor it.
My car lurches about a car length behind the Nissan. He shifts. I gain. I shift. I gain. About 30mph later, I'm passed his bumper up his wheel well.
I slowly let off the throttle and shift, and come neck and neck - then I glance down at the speedometer as I know there's a curve ahead.
Oops. I'm going 120 in a 45.
Before being able to pass him, I coast to slow down and he keeps accelerating. I stick my hand out the window (tints) and turn on my fogs to get his attention and wave goodbye.
I would have beat him if I wasn't chicken.

I'm sure I could have made the turn. I just know cops are in the area... and when I'm already on supervision for a ticket going 115 in a 45, I don't think they'd take too kindly to finding me doing 120+ in a 45.
Maybe next year
350z are pretty nice, except for the whole maintenance thing. I'm pretty sure that unless he did something to the car I would have been able to best him; also due to the fact that I wasn't even trying from the get go, and slowed down neck and neck to (initially) grab his attention.
However, I like my license. Like I said before; maybe next year, when I'm not being supervised. Then at least I have a little buffer for a ticket before losing my license and a lot of money on insurance.
Just curious, but what all do you have done to your vehicle? I didn't anticipate an e36 giving a Z too much trouble if we're talking about an equal amount of mods . . .
Nevertheless, I'm still contemplating getting a M3. Just not sure if it has enough room for me.

Ha, mine's stock. So nothing done to my vehicle (yet).
So far, I've got some new skins/rubber/tires, but I am looking at some cross-drilled rotors first, x-brace second, CAI third, full exhaust (don't know what yet) fourth, followed by a chip. Maybe in the future some more, but by then it'll be after an engine swap most likely.

What do you have. These things are always different from place to place.
Actually, the list I had (I can get it once I'm back at my house, not at work) is a combination of times from several different auto magazines as well as tuner (company) tests. Road and track, Autoweek, Car and Driver, Speed... Tehre were several names mentioned, but they basically took into account several instances - which is why it was trustworthy IMO. But it is also a year and a half old.
