Finally, honesty in displacement naming schemes!!!
From the April 2008 issue of Bimmer magazine, page 4:
"The arrival of the X6, it should be noted, will coincide with the implementation of new model designations. Starting next year, the Federal government will require that any model identification that refers to displacement will have to refer to actual displacement, thus putting the kibbosh on the use of names like "335i" for cars with 3.0 liter engines."
I don't see why the federal government cares. What I would do if I were BMW is that I would put out a press release that states that the first digit indicates series and that any trailing characters are used to differentiate trim levels without bearing any specific significance.
My guess is that BMW will just adopt the same nomenclature they are already using with the z4 and x3, where the base model 3-liter is indicated as 3.0i, while the more powerful one is a 3.0si
Shahid is making reference to the 4 liter engine, but that doesn't apply, because the ///M cars have never had badging meant to identify engine displacement.

um...so are they going back to the 70's and 80's and enforcing this? BMW and Mercedes have been doing this since the beginning of time...so i guess i have to re badge my E30 a 327es??
