Back in 1999 BMW was mocked considerably for its decision to introduce the X5 luxury SUV, but 11 years later and 1,000,000 million units produced and the decision certainly looks like a smart one. While marques like Land Rover had dominated the space, BMW opened up the floodgates that would see every luxury automaker, from Lexus to Porsche get involved in the segment.
And it's not just a German success story either, but an American one, with all one million X5s being built at the automaker's Spartanburg, South Carolina factory. It's popularity has led to the introduction of a diesel model in North America, as well as a high-performance M version offered worldwide.
Plus, the X5's importance has had its effect inside the brand as well, with the subsequent launch of the X3, X6 and upcoming X1 models.
The one millionth X5 model is a Sapphire Black Metallic xDrive35i with Cinnamon Brown Nevada leather interior, destined for a customer in China.
