BMW's introduction of the 5 Series Gran Turismo may just spell the end for the company's Sport Wagon - at least in North America. In a recent report on Autoblog, Martin Berkmann, the man responsible for product planning at BMW North America, said that the GT model could wipe out whatever small demand there is for the wagon in North America.
While a staple of the company's product lineup overseas, luxury wagons have never been popular in North America. In fact, the 5 Series Sport Wagon is such a small part of the BMW lineup that it only offers one take-it-or-leave-it trim, the spacious, sporty and capable 535 xDrive.
The problem is BMW does not offer enough trim options for the wagon. My mom has the 535xiT with a 6 speed and it's a pretty awesome car. I think the fact that the 5-series GT is going to replace the Touring is a perfect example of the wrong direction BMW is taking.
It started with the X5M and X6M over a potential M3 CSL or new Z4M. Now it's come down to the enormously fugly GT (which will probably sell really well unfortunately) over the function and good looking Touring.
NOONE in the world NEEDS crossovers!!!!
If BMW car designers did a good job designing cars beautifully, they would sell great without the need for a useless X5M, X6M, 7M or stuff like the GT
the 7er and the Z4 with standart metal roof are both also good examples that BMW is moving in a horrible direction
