See all the high-resolution photos at AutoGuide.com
After shots leaked earlier today, BMW has now officially revealed full details and high resolution photos of the monstrously powerful 2012 M5. Powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, it makes 552-hp at 6000 rpm and gets an even more significant increase in torque, with the new thrust number of 502 lb-ft coming on full at just 1500 rpm and lasting all the way until 5750 rpm. By comparison, the previous V10-powered M5 made just 380 lb-ft. |
Paired to a 7-speed M dual clutch transmission BMW claims a 0-62 mph time of 4.4 seconds, with a 13 second 0-124 mph speed and a 190 mph top speed with an optional M Package.
In addition to all this performance, BMW claims a 30 percent improvement in fuel economy thanks to that turbocharging system, as well as an Auto Start-Stop function and Brake Energy Regeneration.
To aid in maximizing handling performance the M5 gets a revised suspension setup with new geometry, M Servotronic steering, Dynamic Damper Control and a DSC system with a special M mode. In addition, BMW has equipped the car with a multi-plate limited slip differential that can distribute up to 100 percent of the torque to one wheel.
An M button on the steering wheel allows access to two different drive modes, controlling everything from throttle response, steering response, shift times, stability control, the Dynamic Damper Control suspension and what information is displayed in the heads-up display.
As for the car’s exterior, it gets the usual M upgrades with some flared fenders, 19-inch wheels, a more aggressive front and rear bumper, plus M gills on the fenders. And let’s not forget the M interior with a new center console, M sports seats and an M steering wheel.
With almost all the data now revealed there’s only one thing left to do.. see it in person. Oh wait… and DRIVE it!
