Help attaching a picture

Why can't i attach a picture to my posts? I browse , locate the file, then attach it, but when i post nothing appears.. Can I only post JPEGs? I tried posting a BMP file, could that be why? Apologies if this is not the appropriate place but since I would like to post diagrams to help people from the ETK, i thought it wasn't too inapropriate

This is just a test!!! since its .bmp.... I tried and this is the msg I got:

You cannot upload this type of file;;;

So, we cannot upload.bm I guess!!

Also, you will need to convert/save as to jpeg or gif before uploading.

ahaaaaaah, that explains my problem as well. Glad to hear i'm not the only computer illiterate in here.
