I don't like them but I know why they are here and there for I am OK with them. This is a great forum as long as I'm not getting popups and crap I will keep comin back for more.
I don't mind the links at all. As 007Ben said, as long as there is no popups... well even if there is (a popup blocker is magic) I will be coming back to this site.
Of course they're acceptable, as all sites need a way to support themselves, but they are a pain, mainly for the reason Silver mentioned. If you're going to toss ads at someone, you should at least do the tossing yourself. In other words, right now, not only are you serving ads, but all the heavy searching, highlighting, and ad attachement is done client-side, via JS. If you're going to reap the benefits of the ads, you should also take the added load associated with generating them.
You can't have your cake and eat it too.
