that is for the tow hook , you unclip that and you should have a toe hook or tow eye in the tool box provided in your car. screw in the tow hook and you can tow it out without using the axle or any other more fragile part of the car.
why thank you! thats cool, i finally know what they are for. doesn't it seem like there could be a better place to put them though? someplace where it doesn't stand out so much?
well now I know something a lot of other people dont. thanks!
Make sure you get the damn thing back whenever your car is towed. I've never seen a BMW with the tow hook in the tol get. Tow truck drivers keep the damn things. Then next time they hook up to your control arms and snap them like twigs.
I remember the first time I had to get a tow. Bent rims and blown tires on the right side. To save money I changed the rear good one and the front bad one so both bad ones were on back, only for the tow truck to turn out to be a flatbed.

I think all BMWs have them, at least E30 on. THe tool for the thing is in the trunk in the tool thing. on the part of the trunk that raises. Everyone should look and see if they have one. If not then we need to get a group buy going for these things because they can fuck up your car, while towing it, with out the tow hook.
