first off lemme start by saying that id kill for any M model, i love them all

now what i was thinking is that BMW has taken there famed performance division and made these cars to be the cream of the crop. yet to me i still think they fall slightly short of what a performance division should be. i mean look back a few years ago, the M3 was Americaís best handling car. Now cars like the Mazda MP3 out-handle the newer M3. I mean they still hold a benchmark, but by no means do I consider the M3 a sports car I consider it a sporty car but not a sport car. To me when I think sport car I think Porsche 911 turbo, Ferrari 360, dodge viper, the C05, the new lambo that i canít spell. granted some cars like the Ferrari, lambo, mclaren, lotus etc are considered exotics but still cars like the 911 are somewhat priced within reason.
Our competitors are making faster and faster cars with better handling characteristics than they have ever seen. For example Mercedes AMG division, Acuraís S division, Audiís S division, infinityís new G35 (ya it doesnít compare but hey what was infinity before that car) . My ultimate thought is that BMW is obviously trying to accommodate the masses.

To me the best M3 was the E30 or the e46 M3 coupe, it felt more like a race car and the driver had to sacrifice comfort for performance, THATíS a sports car. I understand that customers want luxury and comfort, inevitably they want their cake and eat it too, full of air conditioning, a nice comfortable ride, sunroof, trunk space etc, etc. blah!

Enter the M3 CSL an overpriced version of the M3. this car has a little more kick and lightened the car power, they have improved handling quite considerably, I think I read somewhere that the CSL has a 1.9 lateral G force rating, which to me is awesome, this takes the handling issue back into our favour, yet for the price that someone will pay for a CSL would it be worth the consumer to pay the cash and get the M3 CSL or buy a Porsche 911, or even to buy a corvette c05 and use the extra money for some serious performance parts

I love BMW and if I were to win tonnes of money, I would still put my money down for a new e46 M3. I cant wait to see what the new Mís will be like (e90), or when they make a MZ4.
Now before you guys kill for what ive said , use rational thought and tell me what you think. Does this sound like I need to get more sleep or am I somewhat right. Keep in mind this is my most extreme thoughts of what I think of the M3, and I understand that ive missed some stuff in this but I wanna hear what everyone else has to say

Allthough my driving experience is limited... (civic cx , Jeep YJ, BMW 328, Accord, Infiniti I30 and now an e36 M3 coupe)..

I dont think you can say the M3 is not a sports car...Ok its not an exotic sports car...but yo...its a sports car man.

But yeah...it is some sort of compromise..they did not go all out, it's more of an accessible sports car.

yet REMAINING a sports car.

you have to realize that some of the stuff you are basing your opinion off is only the opinion of other people. I have driven many of the cars that compete with the M3(S4, Mp3, AMG etc) and found that I like BMW much more then any of the others. Obvisiously people look for different things in cars but from my experience I still think the E46 M3 was the nicest(for the things i like) car I've driven. While its fun to read articles or shootouts I would never base an opinion off that or let it sway my decsion.

Just remember, BMW usually releases their car first while others spend the next 4 years catching up, by then BMW comes out with something that just blows it all away again, its a vicious cycle.

m3 has always made the car that had both luxary and performance. the m3 is the epitomy of that. you get a whole lot for your money, since it has a base price under $50k. bmw went even further in the way of performance with the csl. it has nothing in it (no back seats, no ac, no radio, no leather, all carbon fiber, almost-slick tires, and a trunk floor thats made out of cardboard haha) the csl is way faster, way lighter, and way more powerful than the regular m3. it does cost 20k or so more but its perfect for the hardcore enthusiasts. its still amazing what bmw is able to produce from a inline 6 engine..almost 400hp. thats just unheard of.

Cam is right here. BMW are the innovators. so once everyone catches up they bust some new technology on the scene and leve the other auto manufacturers scrambling to compete

the E30 M3 is the best one in terms of real sports car without all the gizmo's. it was the purest of the breed, though i wouldn't mind having an E46 M3. it's really different than the E30 though

I'll keep my OPINION short and straight. and that is what it is, Just my OPINION. I don't feel the M3 or Mseries for that matter can be called a true sports car. Just alone, I could never see the M3 going up against the viper, Corvette Zo6, or Ford Mustang Cobra R on a track. It just wouldn't hold to it's expectations. There is just that thin line that you can differntiate between a TRUE sports car and those that are close but no cigar. Although being a BMW and Mseries for that matter make it a damn sporty car, but it is just not that of a true sports car. sorry.

well you also have to see it from a global point of view. europeans consider sports cars the type of car that handles great and has good acceleration. if you like at the landscape there, it is composed of mountains. that is why the euro cars handle better than american ones. americans consider a sports car to be a car that can simply haul ass and nothing more. this is why there is formula 1 in europe and nascar in america
