Ok guys, everybody is talking about K&N or Dinan air intakes.

Here at Nikis Place have we been testing on the Niki Project car 1 (E30 - 320) with several different air intake solutions ( OEM, OEM+newer airbox, ITG, UFI, K&N, K&N performance & lastly Green)

Well we had to make our own kit to make it fit BMW E30.

For some darn reason did the mechanics "forget" to make Dyna's of every solution (or did Niki overrule my decission??) but anyhow, this is what we learned :

Tested solutions/ratings:

ITG / -1
OEM / 0
UFI / 0
K&N drop filter / 0
K&N Performance Kit / +1
Green Twister Performance Kit - Nikis Edition / +3

The filter is placed in an aluminium heat shiled which helps to funnel as much air into the filter as possible. The shield helps to create a vortex to maximise the air throug the filter, it also acts as a shield to protech it from engine bay heat.

The top of the filter has a moulded twist in to help spin the air into a vortex for improving air flow through the filter.

Facts:
Air intake diameter: 79 mm
Filter shield lenght: 180 mm
Filter shield diameter: 132 mm

Comes in different colours - but we recommend the aluminium version - as it will remain cool and the air flow will not be heated by engine room.

lol cams right about the gruppeM intake, i paid a hair over $2k for it, but for me, its worth it, any more hp is....the intake itself is soo beautiful, the carbon kevlar weave (nice green tint)....dinan has some more performance mods in devolopment, so im awaiting those, and my exhaust arrived today, and hopefully ill get it installed on saturday....my goal for this car is around 370 naturally aspirated.......forced induction will come later, though who knows if ill still have the car by the time i have enough money for ess's 420hp kit or their 550hp kit...

Ok Guys,

It seems like we can split the Air intake mods into 3 major groups:

A)
Air filter drop
I think its the first mod every BMW owner does, or wants to do.
It's less expensive, and if we believe the adds, will we get brand new engine(not true)

B)
Air filter improvement
Modifications like the mod that Fatty did.
Placing a better/larger filter for increased airflow

C)
Air filter modification.
The most expensive solution.
Changing the intake system and adding high performance parts, such as the DINA (most expensive) or ACS, G-POWER or Green, Dyna Twister. The solution that we have made for BMW.

My conclusion is that we, as in Nikis Place, must head back to the project car and the supplier of Green and start making a solution for A and B.

A discussion or comparison between A, B and C is pointless.

Ok guys - I will kick our tech guys into the garage and lock the door and keep the door locked until we have solutions for A and/or B.

Thx.

If I should make comparison between Green products and solution B would it be Green Diamond series - look at attached picture. - But it's pointless for me to go into any details, as for a start i don't have a clue if they have a version for BMWs, what the price will end up at, etc etc.

what i did find though is that bacause a part is for a Bm they want extra cah, even if it is the identicle part to another car???? so long as the diameter of the "in" end is right it dont matter what its off.....

even then if the "in" bit isnt the right size like mine was, all you have to do is find a bit of pipe off another car to make it fit....
the flexi pipe on mine was off a 1992 ford escort xr3i cut down to size..... it looks ok and does the job.

I believe the diameter is 3 inches. Coincidentally you can create the intake from PVC pipe with a cone filter at the end. Granted you won't have the benefit of R&D, etc, etc but it would get the job done. Heat shields can be made of plastic wrapped in heat resistant materials. Theoretically you can have a piece of PVC tube from the front of the filter to the front of the car (say behind a fog light or something) then connect the back of the filter end to your intake manifold and viola, you've got a CAI. Wrap the whole thing in heat resistant material (of some sort) and you've got a good heat shield. Sure it's ghetto, but do teh math and you'll realize it isn't gonna cost you 2k or more.

Me? I'm not a brand whore. If it does the job, just like any other intake, but costs less, it's good enough. Just because it has 'Brand X' stamped on it does not mean it's any better. I.E. - If the Green filter kit were to make the same numbers as a Dinan kit, I'd go with Green and use the extra cash to get something else.

the s/c will prolly cost over $10k and thats way past my budget to spend on this car, because id be then closing in on the price of a M5.....but ESS is comming out with some baddass S/C Kits for the E46 M3....
