if you take care of that car, with regular maintainance, that car will run up to or past 300k miles. bmws are friggin tanks. believe me, you made a good investment

i'd have it checked out by a shop first though. my alternator had been installed poorly and it warped the pulley which fucked over the bearing and it threw a belt 3 miles after starting to make this god awfull noise. get it checked out, but if everythings fine, like he said. they'll go for a long time.
you said 120.000 had the car on it ... I think that are mile not kilometer! So when I translate it to germany the car had 163.200km on it!
Every think has abrasion, so a car too! You hadn´t buy a new one so the car has attrition! A 318is has got 4-cylinder machine inside, a 6-cylinder machine is there more consumer durable goods!
In germany we say that a car with 100.000km on it have to change the machine oil, the front-axes and gear-oil and clutch! Maybe you have to do this!
But when you buy a car ... check it on every milimeter!!!
bye, Dennis
P.S. A Mercedes has low-quality at the moment, but a BMW are gray up every day!
i would never buy a car with that many miles, and yes bmws require a ton of maintenance compared to other cars, im starting to think the quality just isnt there

i have friends that race theirs autocross and autorally and they have 500,000 miles on theirs and they have never changed anything in the engine (such as gasket or accesories).

not all of us grow money on trees to be able to go out and get a new car...
I think 120k is not bad at all. It shouldn't have any major problems... plus it's a 4 cylinder engine so the parts are cheaper than for the 6 cylinders, as well as labor.
Dennis_Germany, why altezzas goddammit all to hell.
i got 207k on my car, and have had very very little maintance done
i take my car up to redline almost everyday several times.
E30's and older sometimes just have a tendancy to have leaks, and thats about it. but if you just watch em and make sure they get what they need(oil and gas), you hsould be fine.

every old car will have problems. the reason that BMW's seem to last longer is becuase that parts are better quality then most others. The E30s are very simple to work on and fix yourself. With regular oil changes and routine maitnence that car will last you a long time. 120k miles is not even half of the miles i have on my car, and i have had no problems.
