on an E36 what is the M40 engine..... is the 316?????

The M40 engine is fitted in both 316 and 318 models.

Please note that 318I is fitted with M42 and 318i, 318ic and 318ti is fitted with M44.

the obd-1 318's (1.8L) were M42's. the 1.9L 318's were M44's. now theyre up to 2.0L's and called N42's. but i believe a M40 is just a 316.

my younger brother had seen a strut brace on ebay , it was listed to fit an E36 M40, it looked right but we couldnt be sure..... thanks to you all...

he has now signed up here under the name of BEEMER82.
