daily driver? M5
weekend car? M3 or M5
younger person? M3
older? M5
M3 is a high revving ultra tight sports car, where as a M5 is a tourqey V8 that is a little more refined...
it all depends on if its a second car or a primary car. the M5 is a better all-around car, and if its your daily driver then you know your not always gonna be doing spirited driving, so the M5 would be more comfortable and enjoyable to drive when your not going through harpin turns. i'd go with a M5 either way
does he want a fast 4 door sedan?
does he want a smaller 2 door sports car?
does he want a light tossable car or not?
The M3 handles better, but the M5 is faster. They are the same to about 60 and then the M5 will walk away. Both are great looking cars but IMHO the E46 M3 is better looking.
If I had that same choice today, I'd pick the M3. However, I would love to own an M5.

In 1996 when the new 540 came out BMW did not plan on having a E39 M5, so they made some M3/4's, they were later discontinued when BMW started to develop the E39 M5.

the new 330 performance package fills the niche for a faster 4 door 3 series, while it does 0-60 in high 5's its a step up from the normal 330

exactly actually the 5speed 330ci has been clocked at a 5.7-5.8 0to60, so the 330iPP should be around or better than that, which is pretty close to the E36 M3/4's numbers
the fastest was the 330Xi, hit 0-60 in 5.8......the 330 coupe is around 6.0......a 225hp engine, with 214lb-ft of torque cant really hit numbers THAT low, regardless of gearing....

in magazine comparo's ive seen the 330Xi do 5.7, and the 330Ci do 5.8. even a step. 330i did 6.7
