Most fun I have ever had on a long drive was in a 325 from New York to Ft Lauderdale.
Now, after driving a Chevy Tahoe for almost 10 years, I have decided to go for the lust. But questions abound
I drove a 2001 540i (6 sp) the other day. Can't imagine anything better. Your thoughts on maintenence costs, repairs, driving in snow, other choices would be appreciated.
My biggest concern is that a friend who had a 745 said it costs $2000.00 to drive into a dealership, even if everything is ok.
If you know which end of a wrench is which and can work on your car with the advice and help of others then it won't cost you that much. Dealers make a good portion of money off of service. As long as you don't get too happy in the snow and have snow tires you should be ok. The 540 should have about 285 hp. same as the 740s.
Radiator turns to sheet after 35k to 70k costs $135 . oil changes $50 DIY or $160 dealer.

It doesn't sound like you are a "do it your selfer". So i would recomend getting to be friends with a foreign prefferably European car mechanic. Never take the car to the dealership. There are some good mechanics out there that know how to work on BMWs and wont screw you over. There are some but few and far between. So I advise trying to find one in a 30 mile radius and stay ontop of maintiance so they could spot potential problems before they happen.
haha suckers... i got my car at a toyota lot for only a little extra on my loan they will change my oil and do a small 19 point inspection for 4 years on my car... I don't think they know what they agreed too. I will most likely only get my oil changed a handful of times as I've had my car since January and haven't even put 2,000 miles on it yet... and they think its time for me to get it changed already.

Lets see......what they charged you...48 months of interest....Say $200 worth of parts for oil changes and I guarantee you they will find things that need to be fixed when you bring the car in for a oil change. I heard mechanics at some dealers get points for finding service work needed.
