Hey guys, im new here. Im 16 and got my drivers liscense. I want a new car. I have about 17-18K to spend and i was think either 328 coupe or m3. About 1997. OF course, I want an M3. I love everything about it. My mom, however, calls her friend and he tells her that the engines wear out faster in M3 since people drive them harder. He also told her that its not a good car for me since i will kill myself in it. I dont think its the car, i think its the driver. But could you guys tell me, what is better for the money? Is my moms friend right? I dont think so because an m3 does not compare to a 328 coupe. Please give me some things i could say to my mom to get her to change her mind, because i really want the m3 and i need some things to say to get her to change her mind.
tell her if anything the 328 would fall apart first because the m3 engines are the premier 3 series engines they make them better then the rest of the 3 series engines.. also tell her not everyone who owns an m3 drives it hard. for the most part people are gentle on them. my dad has a brand new m3 and ive never seen him gun the thing.. soo.
Autotrader.com has around 250 M3's for less than $18k
Many look very-well cared for (just like most of the rides on this board).
IMO, the insurance, repairs and proper maintenance will cost your parents too much. They should be saving that money for college.
I would get you a one owner 1997 Honda Accord 4 cylinder with 72,500 miles and in excellent+ condition with new tires & battery & recently serviced for about $8k. BTW, its never broken down.
Just like the one sitting in my driveway! :
The insurance cost is more reasonable, it's very reliable and will be much less to repair. More importantly you won't be spending time fussing with it instead of studying. And more importantly, you won't be trying to impress you friends with how fast it goes and probably kill yourself.
Guys but realistically, how much years and stability can i expect if i buy a M3 95-97 with 80,000 miles, moderate condition, going from school to home and other moderate driving. And is there anything wrong with this being my first car, what are the pros and cons of it being my first? Thanks a lot.
dont get it if your going to put around town, get a 328 for that, and save the M3 for others, lol. Naw man, get the M3, but mention that you have the know-how more for M3's because you have been researching them better, and have the resources to good parts for a less price, and that with this car you will do better in school because you will have the motivation to learn more.

I am quoting myself because I think that will go far..

And who's going to maintain it? The dealer, a local mechanic, a friend, You?
Maintenance and repairs get very expensive very fast on a 10 year old bm'r.
Ask around how much the various maintenance services cost or how much a brake job or tires or etc. etc. cost. You'll be surprised how expensive they are. Seriously, don't buy a BMW unless you have money and a job or parents who won't complain about spending thousands per year or maybe you can do all the work and still keep up with school, who knows.
IMO, if you get an M3, I predict you will be selling it within a year or you'll toast it and yourself real soon.
I agree with silver 100$, bimmers do cost a lot to keep up. So look into it before you purchase, you might be really anxious and a good deal will sell you right off the bat, but look into it, and the car. Itd be wise to notify the forum on the car your getting, youd be suprise how much money we can save you, and with all the mech's and others here, we can tell you if what your getting and what your paying is right. Look into it more, and dont make it a 1 day thing. ..IMO.
