Interested In Info On Model Classifications

so i just picked up 93 525i and am just interested in how the model classifictions work.

i'm seeing all the series (3,4,5, etc.). now would the series # be the model and the the other 2 digits represent what the car is equiped with, like vw's gl, gls, and glx?

would it be safe to say that the higher the number, series and within a series, the better the car?

ok what about the letters?

is there a site maybe that shows all of this? i have a feeling that this has been brought up a many time before.

how does my bmw rank umung the other bmws....somewhere in the middle?

oh man i will try to find something that explains this, but there are so many different letters and numbers it's crazy,

The higher the first letter the bigger the car this is the model code, the last two letters in general give the engine capacity but it’s not exact i.e. a 740 could be 4000cc or if it had the layer engine (m62) it would be 4400cc the letter well I = injection X = 4 wheel drive S = sport E = eta (Greek for efficiency) SE = special edition.

iv never heard of SE iv hear of ES wich is both eta and sport

but say a 525ia

is a 5 series
with a 2.5 liter engine ( sometimes its a little off. some 318's were closer to 320)
i is injected
and a would not be on the car, but might be on the paper work and means auto trans

others are

E= fuel effiecnt
S= sport
C= cabriolet
I= injection
X= awd
t= turbo
td= turbo disel

your 525 is an e34

the 25 was the smallest engine availible in that series ( there was also a 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 and the M5) but your 525 might have all the options and some one elses 530 might have no options... so the numbers only explain the series, engine and drive train setups/

and no the M50B25tu was not the smallest engine in the e34. The 1.8 liter engine was the smallest.... Europe had 518i, 520i, 525i, 530i, 535i, 540i and M5 and then the touring (wagon) versions of each.
