I'm a new owner of a BMW 518i. The car is quite old (-96) and there are of course a little bit of work on it that has to be done. My economy is quite bad so I have to do all the work by myself but I also find it enjoyable as I like the repair works on cars. You learn a lot as you go and you learn to know your car better that way. I've owned several cars before including American and Japaneese cars but not a German one. It haven't been any trouble reparing my previous cars and the information is often easily obtainable. To my surprise I found it very difficult to get any good repair manual for the BMW.

I try to find information how to perform certain tasks on the net but it seems like trying to find a whiskey bar in Islamabad. I even tried post questions about how to do it on some news groups but they are getting cernsored quite quickly. Also about all other forums gets censored the same way, just take tech forums for example, you seldom see any question more advanced than an oil change. BMW seems to be more efficient than the RIAA to censor any kind of info that makes able to perform repair yourself. Instead I get answers that I'm gay driving with that weak engine. With all other cars that I've owned I've always recieved polite answers and good help which doesn't seems to be the case with BMW owners.

BMW seems not to be the car for the home mechanics and I realize that this might not be my brand. Then that BMW owners are downright inpolite and harsh is just sad. The owner seems to be a bunch of immature boy racers wannabes kids. All I can say is that BMW is an evil company that makes Microsoft look pale in comparison.

Welcome. Sorry to hear you've had a bad experience. By the way, coming on to a BMW board and saying "Then that BMW owners are downright inpolite and harsh is just sad. The owner seems to be a bunch of immature boy racers wannabes kids" is probably not the best way to make friends and influence people, especially if you are coming here looking for help. Assuming you are here to look for help (instead of just wanting to stop in and insult us) I'll send an e mail to an ex BMW technician who might have an idea where to find a manual for a 518. (I assume thats what your question was since you didn't point out any other particular problem). Since the 518 was never sold in the U.S. and the vast majority of owners here are in the US, most of us won't have access to such manuals but maybe a few of our European members can help

Well my point with the post was to express my anger against this "BMW conspiracy". My intention was not to insult you personally but more a way to question the way of BMW and BMW-owners and start a discussion about it. Now when you mention it as this board is mostly American the type of the BMW owners might differ and are perhaps more like Europeans with American cars, I don't know. As for the technical help is not really in question for now as I'm thinking of selling the car. I'm more interested in the conspiracy thing.

You indicated it's a pre 1996 but I don't know how much older but here's a manual for 518i-520i 1973-1981
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/085...2973428-8240128

ANd here is a manual for all 5 series *EDIT- E34* (and while it doesn't specify 518i on the front, this manual would apply for all parts other than the engine and perhaps transmission and you may have to get a seperate 318 manual to reference those parts)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/083...2973428-8240128

Maybe this will help? Otherwise, I sent an e- mail to a european member and to an ex technician (US) who might know where to look.

Although it looks like you've already made up your mind to sell the car.

the bently manual should be a great help, its probably the best repair manual out there. and as for your car being a 518, it most likely has the same M42 engine in the 318's here in the US so you may be able to get good info from some 3series boards

Thanks for the info. Neither of the books cover my model I think. This is probably like you said the 518 isn't sold in USA. The other book seems to be for older models and I don't know how much that is useful there.

Still I would like to have my questions answered.

1. Is the BMW an appropriate car for the home mechanic. How does it compare to other cars in the matter.

2. On BMW forums, more in deep technical questions is rarely discussed (valve cover removal, ignition failure). Is this because

a ) BMW owners seldom work on their car
b ) BMW censor them
c ) other

i'd say 'A', although if you come across some exclusive E30 or E34 (or older) forums you'll find that they are very tech oriented

although there are many people that are DIYer's and own the newer e36/e46/e39 models

Well, I sense alot of anger. What does seem unfair is that you are already angry on this forum without having asked any questions here. I honestly couldn't tell you where to find anything on a 518. I honestly have never seen one nor a manual on one. I would imagine this is because 1) It's a European car and 2) It's presumably rare. I would assimilate this to finding a repair manual for a 1940 Lincoln Continental Club Coupe. Nevertheless, if you have a technical question, please feel free to ask.

Well, since you ask what technical question I have give the question one last chance (asked the question on many other forums). My starter motor is sometimes clicking, that meaning that the motor turns but the solenoid doesn't kick the cog wheel onto the big cog wheel in the bell house. This particulary true when the engine is already hot.

Now I would like to remove the starter motor to check it. What I've found out is that the motor seems to be fastened with two torx bolts. I remove these but the starter motor wont come off anyway. I try to find any extra bolt that might hold the motor but I cannot find any. The starter motor is so stuck that it feels it is fastened with some extra bolt.

BTW. this is a 518g, a bivalent CNG powered car which means that the car is even more rare. The engine is the same as the petrol engine though.
