I've never owned a Bmw, but have always aspired to. I'm 21 years old and live in the San Francisco bay area. In chosing a car, purchase price and running cost are very much a concern. For me, I would put comfort and style over performance. In the $7 -10k price range, what would be the most car for my money under my criterea. I have often heard that a 5-series is a much better car than a 3-series?
i would go for the 3 series for a few reasons
1) 3 series tend to be easier/cheaper to replace parts on
2) ive driven both, they are both fun to drive, but the 3 series wins that battle
3) i dont think non m5s have stick shifts, but i could be wrong
4) i think they are more stylish, but its completely up to your tastes
5) i own one :P
you cant go wrong on either though

You can get a 1996 328 for $10k. I don't know about running costs compared to other manufacturers but mine is expensive! (My dealership will replace the clutch for only 634 euro ($ 770) coming Friday)

Well, since you said you care more about style and comfort than performance, then I am guessing that stick shift or not doesn't really mater. Definitely go with 5.
