i was checking edmunds.com for consumer reviews on some cars... i checked the acura TSX, it has a 9.6 rating, and the 3 series has much less than that. i'm reading the comments from the past few years, 98-present mostly to see what pepole think. and there are SO many electrical problems noted on this, it's crazy.
examples..


Review: I purchased my vehicle straight from the factory.The electrical and mechanical problems have been a nightmare, now my car has started to shutter and stall when taking off, still under warranty but apparently problem not covered, only 39,000 miles on it but looking to drive another car soon. No car of this calibur should have so many problems, already had the motor in sunroof, sensor, door seal, window brackets, lights, dash lights etc, etc replaced so much repaired I made a file for it. This car is not the ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE its a DRIVING NIGHTMARE MACHINE

Review: I like a lot of aspects of this car. Great appearance, pin-point handling and rock-solid brakes. However, I've had several annoying and far too numerous electrical problems. I don't think this car has ever gone more than 90 days without a problem of one sort or another. I've heard of other people with the same kind of problems. German build quality is good, but they should send their electrical guys back to school.

Review: So far, this car has been so much fun to drive. I don't know how BMW does it, but their smallish 6 cyl feels big. It rides and drives wonderfully. As for complaints, it seems as if we all have the same problems. I've had the driver side window regulator replaced twice, and all other windows once. Sunroof shade clip broke just like the others too. Brakes put out tremendous amounts of dust, and wore out at 30000 miles, but they work! Stereo speakers definitely not up to the standards of this car. Overall, I love this car, but I'm not looking forward to my warranty running out. My next one will have a 5-spd and sport package.

Review: Was not pleased when the window regulators on BOTH the driver and front passenger windows needed to be replaced within 24 months. Also, had to get the moonroof liners replaced twice between 12 and 24 months. Make sure to ask for windshield wipers @ your 12 mo. maint. repairs. (Need to claim they are streaking.) Don't bother writing to BMW about quality problems (windwow regulators) - they will just send you a form letter saying they are sorry to hear from you. Also - the firm they outsource to will be good at calling to follow up on how you felt about your recent repair experiance - but when you complain nothing happens.

Review: Before this car I would have bought BMW's for the remainder of my driving days. Now, I will not buy another one. True, it is fun to drive. Although sluggish on the uptake, the sport auto transmission makes up the difference. Mechanically this car is a nightmare. Mine is in the shop every 6 weeks and when I get it back I call the next week to set up another service appointment. For city dwellers with less than expressway quality roads, don't buy this car. You will be replacing wheels (rims) every year at a cost of $1200+ and tires every 15k miles. Keep your money and buy something more economical and reliable.

Review: Rear tail light burns out 3 months after purchase. Dealer took care of it with NO PAPER WORK. 8 months later, same light burns out. Service guy handed me 5 bulbs, NO PAPER WORK. I neglected to notice a few little electrical problems from a few months after purchase. After 3 years and 106,000 miles here are my electrical problems: Left rear tail light won't work, sun roof won't work all the time, headlights pulsate in intensity along with clicking sound in glove box, and this: door locks don't work all the time. I got the attention of BMW, USA and they paid HALF the cost $2,100! Why? Because I didn't document my electrical problems before my warranty expired.

Review: Driving the BMW328i is a pleasure, but my driving pleasure is overshawdowed by the times my car has been in the shop for repairs. In 2001 with 24,000 miles on the car, I replaced the front brakes, pads and rotors for $1500. While on business travel in September, my husband called to tell me he was at the dealer's with my car and all it needed (smile ) was front and rear brakes, pads, rotors and a new suspension system to the tune of $3,000. My previous car, '94 Honda never went in the shop for suspension problems, and it had over 85,000 miles on the odometer when I gave it to my son

with the TSX vs the 3 series; dont forget that the TSX 'just' came out and im sure it has alot more fewer votes. I think the 3 series was judged over its time period which is already 4 years?

yeah bmws do have electrical problems. Ive known that before we got the bmws...but for some reason, we are having good luck with them so far. I had no electrical problems in mine, my moms 1995 740 had one window regulator replaced last year. But for what BMW is made of (awesome handling, great looks, nice performance) to me, it certainly outweighs a window regulator.

IT's all relative. I've not had a single issue with my 3-er, and she's 5 years old. Sometimes people just get screwed at the dealership. That's the major reason why I don't let other hands touch my car. I do the work myself because I trust myself (and If I screw it up I can only blame myself). I've known mechanics who f other stuff up just for the repeat business. Fix a light here, frey a wire there, blow a fuse here, disconnect a sensor there ...

Oh, and for the jackass complaining about replacing rims and tires - It's called avoidance. Avoid the pot holes at all costs, or at the very least don't hit them at 90 mph.

you think it's really sabotage that the electrical systems fail? they could be put away for doing that to people's cars.

Not in ever case, no. But I would not be suprised if it happened more than we thought. Then again, no car is perfect. I'm sure similar things happen with other makers.

werd guy sounds totally anal prolly drives the car like shit...

No electrical problems for me so far and I got 73K miles on a 99 E46

i consider honda to be the most reliable car. they are renown for that, and i guess it's because my parents have owned many hondas, including a 94 accord that they gave to my sister and she just got rid of for her saab, and that had NO problems. it got a few flat tires and one of our trees fell on it when it got struck by lightning, but no electircal problems. it didn't have a sunroof or gadgets like auto climate control but it never had a problem. everyone i know with a honda never has problems. i wonder how they're so good at making reliable cars, while cars like the ford taurus are riddled with problems.

Cause when the cars are on the drawing board their goal is reliability and economy not performance. A lot more can happen with rear wheel drive than front wheel drive when it comes to mechanical problems...

Obviously when your goal is performance, reliability is not #1 but it's always a plus.

Here's how I look @ it IMHO:

BMW= Performance, Luxury,
Honda = Reliability, Economy
Ford = Economy (depending on which vehicle you're looking at)

the e46 is still by far the better car. my dads e46 had to have those window regulators replaced about 10 times within 35k miles, and every time he got them fixed it caused a leak, so thats 20 trips to the dealer for the stupid windows. plus he had some brake light problems, and one summer the climate control went bizzerk, but its still an awesome car despite inconveniences. those reviews are just a bunch of ppl whining about little crap, nobody's forcing u to buy a e46 but it is much more enjoyable than a tsx, plus all those window problems were permantly solved within early 2001 production.

There's always going to be something. I had a friend with a 90 Accord that had plenty of electrical problems. Plus some mechanical issues. It happens. I agree that Honda's are very reliable cars (wait, do I hear Speed yelling Rice from PR?) and so are Toyotas. Jaguar's had many electrical and mechanical issues beore Ford took them over, I have a froend that had an Audi that was in the shop more times than I can count (for all kinds of dumb crap). You have to expect those things from any car manufacturer. But I still firmly believe that many shops do sabotage cars for the repeat business. It like selling you insurance/warranty/ undercarriage spray that you simply don't need. Pure profit.
