Would Like To Improove My Sound System

Hi everyone,
I would really appreciate any kind of advice concerning speaker improvement in my 2000 328ci.
I already changed the business radio and currently now, I am running a superb ALPINE CD 7893 R stereo system.
My problem now comes from the side of the speakers. I do not have the HARMAN KARDON premium speaker system and would like to install something that sounds better and costs less.
I would also like to loose the less room as possible of my trunk. The ideal thing would be loosing the same volume lost with the HARMAN KARDON system.
I guess I will also need an amp....... would also appreciate any suggestion.

PS: I have tried a CLARION active subwoofer (very thin - I believe the diameter of the speaker is 20 cm) but the bass has difficulties to reach the inside part of the car. The trunk is so hermetic!

I would probably recomend replacing your amp and probably sub amp with beefier components to cut through your hemetic trunk. You could port the rear deck, but as I always prefer MORE POWER, I would do the former.

As for other components, some suggestions of brands might be helpful...

Amps:
Xtant or HiFonics- High End
Precision Power or Infinity- Mid Grade
Kenwood Excelon- Good Entry Level

Speakers
DynaAudio or Diamond Audio - High End
Infinity, PolkAudio, MBQuart- Mid Grade

Subs
Xtant, Hart High End
Infinity, Kicker- Mid Grade

I do have another question.

My brother owns a 2001 330d (the ultimate Diesel rocket) that comes with the Harman Kardon system.
Is there something special is this subwoofer kit (air conducts, etc...) that helps bass to get inside the car?
I do not know the size of the subwoofers (an would like to know it).
They seem very small but have a correct kick. Way better that my CLARION active subwoofer ghead .
If there was some air conducts to conduct the bass, is it possible to buy a second hand H-K kit (to use air conducts, if they do exist) and change the speakers for better quality ones?
