Will These Speakers Fit My Rear Deck (e36)?

I am replacing my rear deck speakers on my '94 318is. I know to use 4" speakers and looking at th Inifinity 4002i 4". I noticed on Crutchfield that certain 4" speakers won't fit my car ( I believe I have a "4T" mount)--how do I know if these will fit--I am buying them from eBay.

i took the plastic boxes out of my 94 318i that house the rear 4 inch speakers and i was able to fit 5 1/4 inch speakers in the rear, but if you want to you can easily put either 6 1/2 speakers or even 6x9s in the rear which im currently in the process of building...check the link out below

hope that helps a little...and if you want you can pull those plastic boxes out in the rear and measure the holes to see if the speakers your bidding on fit

Do you loose any sound quality since the new speakers are not installed in a box? Doesn't the box resonate the sound and make it sound fuller?

The box actually does help create a miniature "subwoofer" of sorts, and it does indeed help. However, it is true that you can mount up to 6.5" speakers on your rear deck - my car has them stock, and all e36's in theory should have the same rear deck. Make sure that when you mount the new speakers, if you take out the box, to mount them as tight tot he frame as you can to reduce rattle. You might have to buy some kind of adaptor or something - I noticed today when I was soldering that the mounts that the 6.5's were on were shaved in parts to mold to the frame of the car.

plus if you think about it.....6 1/2 inch speakers not in a box will produce a heck of a lot more bass and sound than 4 inch speakers in a box, i threw in some crappy 6x9s and was blown away with the amount of bass that was added to my system

Come to think of it, 6x9 seems to be the ideal size for those ports they give into the rear passenger compartment...

The "enclosure" for a 6x9" (in design) is supposed to be 20-30 cubic feet. That is why they get the good bass you are speaking about. The 25 cubic foot trunk is an excellent enclosure. A typical 6.5" has less than one cubic foot.

If you can fit a 6x9" in the rear deck and you can see the bottom of the speaker in the trunk area, and there is no gaps around the speaker, you should have a pretty good bass response.

so is there no way to fit 6x9's in the same place as the current rear speakers in an e36?
