I am planning to replace pretty much all of them. The stock rear ones are 6.5in speakers i believe and a little tweeter to the side, but I'd just rather get the new 2way or 3 way. Any recommendations for those and the front ones?? I think there are 6 in front altogether - 3 on each side. One tweeter in the door by the mirror, one speaker oin the kickpanel and one on the dash.. I am not sure about the sizes on those though..

I also have a 90 525i. I have 5.25" in the rear deck (plus the tweeter you mentioned), 5.25" in the kickpanels @ the front floorboard, and a pair of tweets by the mirror. I left my mirror tweets for now, but replaced all the 5.25"ers with Inifintys Kappa series. They make a good, affordable set. You can either do coaxials or a component set. The component set sounds better but at a small upgrade in pirce.
It really depends on your type of music. As XM radio has a lot of different types of music, talk, etc, I listen to about everything there is. To round out the low end, a pair of Focal 11"ers are in a bandpass box firing through the ski hole in the rear seats (keeps the trunk from rattling, plus I dont as big of amp to make it loud).
I always tell people to listen to MANY different speakers/radios/amps etc. before purchasing, but listen to the same song. This gives you the true differences between them. Burn you a cd with a song you are familiar with and listen to that same song on every piece of equipment that you listen to. Dont just go with what friends tell you or what people tell you on a forum board.
You are the one that has to listen to the choices you make. I was lucky working for a car audio shop, I got to try out different stuff in my car and settled with the components I have now and I wouldnt change them for anything.
Good Luck...
