I have 96' 318i and the tape deck standard with the car, lights don't show. What i mean is that i can't see the radio station. i think it needs a new bulb or something, how hard is this to repair. Are there intructions available anywhere.
the factory headunit is prone to getting hot. this can kill the bulb, but it can also crack the sodder and mess up the display entirely. So, you can remove the HU, take it apart, replace the bulb, resodder the connection, and then re install.
Or you can buy a CD player. Do they still make cassettes?

hha, I don't listen to cassette but i have a cd-tape convertor. I would get new CD deck but then it does'nt look that good, my interior would be seen out of place. Also whats weird is that lights go on and off, like some time they are very bright and sometime nothing shows up.
is the soddered connection. I'll post a link sowing how to repair it when i get home.
In the mean time...
If you are concerned about OEM look, but want a CD player, I just installed a new pioneer in my bro jeep. He has a sony something that looks very OEM. I think its 40Wx4. Im sure he would sell it to you cheap. You would need to do a bit of wiring, as I cut the harness to save having to buy a new adapter. it's not bad, but its not great either. He'd let it go cheap.
Also, if you are ready to move up to serious sound, eclipse and nakimichi make oem-looking HUs. Alpines are obviously aftermarket, but much more reserved than others. look in the pinned HU and you can get some ideas.

Same thing happened to me, I just bought an aftermarket hu. Best decision I ever made, the sound in the car is sooo much crisper.
