im with you bimmergurl10, i have a system in my car too :P
best buy to me have some horrible car audio products, but its the easiest place to get started. if you are starting to get into car audio, best buy is the first place to go.
if you are car audio freak like me, i would go for *nicer* products that best buy, circuit city doesnt offer. Go for brands like Alpine, Xtant, Eclipes, Kenwood, JL, etc. I strongly not recommend Sony Mobile Audio since 1) they suck, and 2) ive had a few bad experiences with them so umm yeah...sony=a nono
headunits i suggest Alpine. Not only they sound phenomenal, some headunits have matching amber buttons that match BMW's interior, for example the CDA-7894 (i have, but its discontinued).

why do you say eww? e30's are badass i think redtapes method is the best, although you should also try circuit city and any other close audio stores before you pull the trigger.

go to Best Buy and say.....
"look I have 500 dollars, put a system in my car!"
EASY
telling a sales person how much money you have in your pocket is the worst thing to do...i should know i am a car stereo sales person! When you go in somewhere and tell someone ok I have $500 to spend and I want a system, they will automatically mark stuff up(if they aren't honest) and use all of that 500 and maybe a little more if they can weasel you out of it....There are plenty of options to piece together a nice amp, sub, box and wiring for under $400....Luckily I am a honest person and when people do come in and say that I will try to upsell them to something worth $500 but I would never sell them something cheaper and mark it up so my profit margin increases...I have seen and heard of too many sales people doing this kind of thing to someone..Just browse around some different stores and tell them what kind of bass you want what you listen to and see what they have to offer...If they price you something above your range then tell them, "Well I wasn't looking to spend that much do you have a good quality setup for cheaper?" Then they can maybe try a smaller amp and maybe a smaller sub...Automatically giving in to the sales person lets them know, "Hey I've got this guy/girl and if I can piece together the right setup I have them hooked!" Make the salesperson do their job and make them try to sell it to you!

if you want really good deals...check online. My system totals about $2400 retail; and i got it all for $1800 from online sources and special deals at stores around town.
